Welcome to Northern Trades!
The Legacy is in the Details.
Our Roots
Northern Trades wasn't born in a boardroom; it was born in the quiet moments between stitches. It was born from the smoky aroma of brain-tanned hide and the rhythmic click of glass beads against a birch bowl.
In the North, "Trade" has always been more than a transaction. it’s a language. For generations, the exchange of beads, hides, and knowledge has been the heartbeat of our communities. We are here to ensure that heartbeat remains strong, vibrant, and unapologetically high-quality.
The Northern Trades Standard
We believe that the hands of a master deserve materials that match their skill. That’s why we don’t do "craft grade."
Curation Over Catalog: We don’t just sell beads; we curate palettes. Every Miyuki 11/0 shade in our shop is hand-selected to reflect the true colors of the Alaskan tundra—from the dusty purple of the Arctic Lupine to the deep indigo of a sub-arctic midnight.
Authentic Foundations: Our hides & furs are prepared with respect for the animal and the tradition
Artist-First Partnership: We exist to amplify the voices of the makers. Through our partnerships, we provide the tools, the platform, and the community to ensure that the "Northern Trade" continues for generations to come.
A Note from Devin Stoneraven
"The first time I smelled smoked hide, I knew I was home."
Growing up in the North, you realize quickly that art isn't something we just put on a wall; it’s something we wear, something we gift, and something we pass down. But as a maker, I found myself frustrated. I saw incredible artists—people with generations of talent in their fingertips—struggling to find the quality of materials their work deserved.
I started Northern Trades because I believe that the materials are the first step in honoring the tradition. If we are going to tell our stories through beadwork, those stories deserve the shimmer of the finest glass and the soul of a brain-tanned hide.
Every kit we build, every bead color we name, and every hide we source is done with a singular thought in mind: Is this good enough for my elders? Is this worthy of the next generation?
When you sit down with one of our kits, you’re not just a customer to me. You’re a collaborator in keeping a legacy alive. I’ve hand-selected these items to reflect the land that inspires us daily, and I can’t wait to see what you create with them.
